When we first spoke with Hello Mary, it was clear something special was on the way. Their latest album, Emita Ox, which is out today via Frenchkiss Records, shows huge growth in their previous efforts, and spoiler alert-it’s absolutely brilliant.
The New York Three, Helena Straight, Stella Wave, and Mikaela Oppenheimer, have outdone themselves here. Emita Ox is one of the most compelling alt-rock albums of the year, and we are very excited that it’s finally out. It’s unapologetically experimental, which is what we have grown to expect from these legends in the making. But this time, they’ve added more layers, more textures, and a lot more heart.
I love how diverse Emita Ox is. Each song is like its own planet, but when they come together in a single playthrough, they orbit in perfect synchronicity. From 0% with its grimy basslines and the shimmers of Bubble whisking you away, then Three-which easily could be the best song on this album.
It’s worth noting that Emita Ox is a deeply personal record for the band, with some tracks dating back years and others being written only weeks before hitting the studio. The outcome is an album that captures the soul of Hello Mary’s journey so far: real, passionate, and daring. They’re not afraid to throw in unexpected twists, whether it’s a doo-wop-inspired rhythm or a goblin-filled music video, and we live for it.
Overall, Emita Ox feels like the culmination of everything Hello Mary has been building towards. It’s an album that doesn’t shy away from experimentation but remains grounded in the band’s roots. Whether you’re into the heavy riffs or the delicate atmospheric moments, this LP demands your attention. Listen to it here.
