Celebrating National Coming Out Day

0
National Coming Out Day 2022

October 11th is National Coming Out Day when members of the LGBTQ+ community celebrate coming out and living their truths. For many queer people, coming out is a pivotal moment in their lives, one that can lead to greater acceptance and happiness. In honour of National Coming Out Day, let’s examine why coming out matters and how it can positively impact your life.

The Power of Coming Out

Coming out can be a powerful act. It allows you to take control of your narrative and define yourself on your terms. In a world where queer people are often invisible, it will enable you to be seen and heard. It also allows you to forge bonds with other members of the LGBTQ+ community who understand what you’re going through.

Seeing someone else own who they are can be enormously helpful for queer people who have yet to share this part of themselves. It normalises the experience and shows there is no reason to be ashamed. When high-profile celebrities and public figures openly talk about it, it can have a massive impact and be a source of comfort. Their visibility helps break down barriers, encourages others to live their truths, and allows people to “test the waters” with friends and family to see how they react to the news.

The Benefits of Coming Out

Coming out has many benefits both for the individual and society. On a personal level, it can lead to a greater sense of self-acceptance and improved mental health. It can also help you build stronger relationships with family and friends. Sometimes, it may lead to finding new friends and community members who better understand and accept you.

From a societal perspective, coming out helps break down stereotypes and misconceptions about the LGBTQ+ community. It also challenges the notion that being queer should be a dirty little secret. Bit by bit, we’re ending the stigma.

A Changed Perspective

Coming out can also change your perspective on life. Once you’ve taken this step, you’ll likely see the world differently. You’ll be more aware of the daily struggles and challenges that queer people face. But you’ll also be more attuned to the beauty and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. This new perspective can liberate and help you lead a more authentic and fulfilling life.

How to Come Out

There is no one right way to come out. You can do it in person, online, or even in writing. The most important thing is that you do it in a safe and comfortable way. Remember, you have the power to control your narrative. You can choose when, where, and how you do it.

You can start by talking to a trusted friend or family member. This can help remove some pressure and allow you to practice sharing this part of yourself. You can also join an LGBTQ+ support group or community organisation. These groups can provide a safe and supportive space to explore your identity.

If you’re not ready to bust out of the closet loudly, that’s okay, too. You can take your time and do it when you’re good and ready, if at all. Remember, there is no rush. This is your journey; you should do it at your own pace. You can choose to live “out” in your own way. You might not want to tell the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live your truth.

The Importance of Acceptance

Of course, not everyone has a positive coming-out experience. For some people, it leads to rejection from family members, friends, and others in their life. This can be incredibly difficult to deal with, but it’s important to remember that not everyone will approve of you—and that’s okay. It goes both ways. We don’t want bigots in our lives, do we? Uh-uh. Let the trash take itself out. Most importantly, you need to be at peace with and accept yourself. Once you do that, everything else will fall into place.

Sadly, all of this only applies if you are safe. For queer people who are in abusive households or live in countries where being gay is illegal or where there is little to no protection from discrimination or violence, coming out is not an option. However, building community is still possible, even if you can’t do it openly. You are not alone. A whole community of people support you, no matter what. We’re proud of you.

Happy National Coming Out Day! We hope everyone has a safe and supportive experience if they come out today or at any point in their lives.

National Coming Out Day is an important day for members of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a day to celebrate living your truth and being your authentic self. It’s also a day to remind everyone that queer people are here, we’re visible, and we’re not going anywhere. So on this National Coming Out Day, take a moment to celebrate yourself—and all the other remarkable queer people in your life.

International Lesbian Day: A Celebration of Love, History, and Showing Up for Each Other

International Lesbian Day 2022

So… what actually is International Lesbian Day?

Every 8 October, lesbians and the people who love us take a collective moment to say, “Hey, we’re still here. And we’re pretty cool.” It’s a day for every woman who loves women, and for everyone who’s ever found a home in that community.

The origins are a little fuzzy (fitting for queer history). Some say it started in New Zealand in 1980; others swear it began in Australia sometime in the ‘90s. Wherever it started, it’s now a global event marked by parties, protests, panels, playlists, and the occasional heartfelt cry in a women’s bathroom.

At its heart, the day is about reflection and resistance—honouring how far we’ve come, naming what still needs changing, and holding space for every flavour of sapphic experience.

Why it still matters

Visibility days can feel symbolic, sure, but they’re also survival markers. When you’ve spent decades watching queer women erased or sanitised, seeing the word lesbian celebrated publicly still hits different.

It’s a reminder that we exist in every shape, shade, and pronoun combination imaginable. We’re community organisers, tradies, trans women, First Nations aunties, disabled babes, gender-fluid partners, femmes in flannel, and masc cuties who still cry at Bluey.

And yes—some of us do love Birkenstocks and moving in on date two. (Representation matters.)

The importance of inclusivity

The lesbian community has never been one-size-fits-all, and it never should be. Media still loves the neat image of the white cis lesbian couple with matching denim jackets—but our community is so much richer than that.

Days like International Lesbian Day give us permission to widen the lens. To centre lesbians of colour, trans lesbians, disabled lesbians, neurodivergent lesbians, elders, and those still figuring things out. Because lesbian identity isn’t a mould; it’s a spectrum of joy, gender, and gorgeous chaos.

Celebrate loudly—or quietly, if that’s more your speed

Whether you’re at a city march, a backyard picnic, or just sending a “thinking of you” text to your queer bestie, this day is about connection. It’s about saying: we belong, we matter, and we’re not going anywhere.

So wear the rainbow, share your stories, or simply exist unapologetically. Because sometimes survival is celebration.

Stay unruly.

TL;DR

  • Date: October 8
  • What: International Lesbian Day — celebrating women who love women (and everyone in our orbit)
  • Origin: Likely New Zealand (1980) or Australia (1990s)
  • Why it matters: Visibility, inclusivity, and pride in every form of lesbian identity
  • How to mark it: Dance, donate, march, rest, exist. Whatever joy looks like for you

Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the Time Lord

0

It’s been a wild ride, but all good things must come to an end. Jodie Whittaker’s time as the iconic Time Lord will soon end, with her final episode set to air on Sunday, October 23. However, before she regenerates into the next Doctor, there’s one last adventure waiting for her – and it looks like it will be a doozy.

The full trailer for The Power of the Doctor has just been released, and it looks like Sacha Dhawan’s The Master is up to no good. In the foreboding trailer, The Master says: “Hello Doctor, welcome to the end of your existence” before we witness a sequence of devastation with Daleks and Cybermen attacking Earth. We then glimpse Jodie’s regeneration as she calls out for Yaz in fear. Yikes!

A plethora of familiar faces will appear in the Thirteenth Doctor’s final episode, including Tegan (Janet Fielding), Ace (Sophie Aldred), Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), and Vinder (Jacob Anderson). For the last hurrah, they will partner with The Doctor and Yaz (Mandip Gill).

Ncuti Gatwa, best known for his role in Sex Education, will play the title character of the Doctor. With this said, 2023 also marks Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary series of specials with Russell T Davies returning to the show.

It will be an action-packed adventure for The Doctor and her friends, so be sure to tune in on Sunday, October 23 at 7 pm BST on BBC One to see how it all ends. We have a feeling it’s going to be pretty emotional.

What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited about the final episode? Let us know in the comments below!

Support your local this National Bookshop Day

National Bookshop Day

Saturday, October 8, is National Bookshop Day! This annual campaign, organised by the Booksellers Association, encourages consumers to shop at their local bookshop to support their high street. In light of recent events, supporting your local bookshop has never been more critical. Here are some ways you can do just that:

1) Shop local and buy books! This one is self-explanatory—if you want to support your local bookshop, purchasing books from them is the best way to do it. So try to visit your local bookshop on Saturday, October 8 and pick up a new read (or two, or three…). Not only will you support a small business, but you’ll also discover some great new books in the process. Win-win!

2) Spread the word. Please help get the word out about National Bookshop Day by telling your friends and family about it. Use social media to share your favourite photos of your local bookshop and use the hashtag #NationalBookshopDay or #BookshopDay. The more people who know about it, the better!

3) Leave a review. Have you recently read a book from your local bookshop that you loved? Be sure to leave a positive review online—this helps other potential customers discover great new reads and lets the world know you support your local bookshops. Every little bit helps!

Why Choose Bookshops?

Local bookshops are essential to the community and offer a unique shopping experience you can’t get from online retailers or large chain stores. When you shop at a local bookshop, you support a small business owner and local jobs for your community. You’re also more likely to find personalised recommendations and a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere—something hard to come by these days.

Why not make a day of it this Saturday and treat yourself to a new book (or two)? It’s a great way to show your support for small businesses—and you might find your new favourite read in the process. Happy National Bookshop Day!

Boy Destroy releases new video for ‘Two Faces’

Boy Destroy Two Faces Video

Boy Destroy has dropped a new video for the single ‘Two Faces‘. The video, directed by Kristoffer Jansson and produced by Siri Westerberg, is a trippy, gothic visual feast that perfectly compliments the hauntingly catchy song.

Boy Destroy Two Faces

In ‘Two Faces,’ Boy Destroy tells the story of duality and the struggle to do good in a world that is often dark and full of suffering. The first verse references the movie Pet Sematary, which is fitting given the themes of death and destruction throughout the song.

The video is a visually stunning work that will surely captivate viewers. Jansson’s clever use of fast-paced and contrasting layered transitions creates an eerie atmosphere that perfectly matches the song’s tone. Westerberg’s production work is also top-notch, with the video’s creepy visuals creating an excitingly unsettling viewing experience.

If you’re a fan of dark, atmospheric music videos, this is one you’ll want to check out.
