Toss a coin, witcher fans! CD PROJEKT RED has just announced that The Witcher, the first game in their highly acclaimed RPG trilogy, is getting a modern remake.
This news comes as the original game celebrates its 15th anniversary and promises to give players an exciting new way to experience the first chapter in Geralt of Rivia’s story. The project, currently codenamed ‘Canis Majoris,’ will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology and supervised by CDPR.
Fool’s Theory is developing the remake, a studio made up of veteran developers who worked on previous instalments in The Witcher franchise. While details are limited at this early stage in development, fans can rest assured that the team knows and loves the source material just as much as they do.
But don’t take our word for it; here’s what CD Projekt RED’s Head of Studio Adam Badowski had to say about the project: “Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger… Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games.“
Fellow developer, Jakub Rokosz from Fool’s Theory, added: “I am very happy that my professional paths have crossed again with fellow developers from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it’s a remake of a project that is so close to our hearts, we are excited to join forces with CD PROJEKT RED, and our goal is to give players another great game from the iconic Witcher series.“
