Sunna Margrét’s latest single, ‘Fern‘, is out now, and she’s brought along two bonus tracks, ‘Garland‘ and ‘Sickness‘ to round out the release. Dropping via No Salad Records, this new material is the sequel to her critically acclaimed album Finger on Tongue, which made quite the impression earlier this year.
Sunna explains that ‘Fern’ is about the frustration of being ignored when you’re trying to communicate something important. “It can even be interpreted politically,” she says, reflecting on how the song evolved during a residency in Nantes, where she re-recorded the vocals.
The bonus tracks are just as powerful. ‘Garland’ is a one-take, energetic, percussion-heavy track. Sunna says it was “perfect just like that, very raw,” so she didn’t mess with it. Meanwhile, ‘Sickness’ takes you to a different space entirely. “It’s kind of sad and tragic, but it ends with a rebellion or some sort of victory. It shouldn’t be explained too much. It’s a piece that makes me feel vulnerable,” she shares.
Fans can catch Sunna Margrét performing at Iceland Airwaves on November 8th, where she’s bound to dazzle with her ethereal sound. If you haven’t yet dipped into her world of experimental krautrock-inspired synth-pop, now’s a perfect time. Fern is available to stream now.
