Leeds-based electronic artist NikNak has released her fourth studio album, ‘Ireti,‘ today via Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records. Along with the album, she’s dropped a new single, ‘Pandora’s Box,‘ featuring British-Jamaican vocalist AGAAMA.
NikNak, known for her unique turntablism and immersive soundscapes, has been praised by DJ Mag, Clash, Mixmag, and The Wire. Her debut album ‘Bashi‘ established her as a standout in experimental electronic music, and ‘Ireti‘ promises to be another major milestone.
Talking about ‘Pandora’s Box,’ NikNak says, “The track is about breaking free from AI, the heaviness of being human and the conflicts we face with technology. I really love AGAAMA’s voice and have been wanting to work with her for a while now. We spent some time together in the studio, coming up with ideas about the concept and the track’s lyrical content, listening to Florence and the Machine for inspiration. This is probably the poppiest track I’ve ever made, and it was so much fun working with AGAAMA on this.”
‘Ireti’ explores Afrofuturism, blending jazz, jungle, experimental, and trip-hop elements. Inspired by Blade Runner and Cyberpunk 2077, the album tells a dystopian story about reclaiming humanity from machines. Where’s Aloy when you need her?
The music video for ‘Pandora’s Box,’ directed by Xan Gilmour and animated by Alexa Velasquez, follows two survivors of an AI war as they reconnect with nature.
‘Ireti’ features collaborations with Cassie Kinoshi, Chisara Agor, Grifton Forbes-Amos, and SlowPitchSound.
NikNak will be performing across the UK and Europe this spring and summer. Get on it.
