If you’re a metalhead gamer who’s still under the spell of Cult of the Lamb, then you’re about to have all your dreams come true. The team at Massive Monster, in partnership with Devolver Digital and Laced Records, have unleashed something unholy (in the best way possible): a heavy metal reimagining of the game’s soundtrack, titled ‘Hymns of the Unholy’.
This six-track metal makeover, created by a star-studded lineup of musicians, is set to hit streaming platforms on October 28th. We’re talking Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage), Matthew K. Heafy (Trivium), guitar wizards from Polyphia, Animals as Leaders, Malevolence, and drums by Mike Malyan (ex-Monuments) – all contributing to an epic remix of River Boy’s award-winning soundtrack.
The lead single, ‘CULT‘, is out now, with an official music video animated by Half Giant. Watch the video below, featuring both footage from previous trailers and brand-new scenes telling the Lamb’s journey to godhood.
Massive Monster co-founder Jay Armstrong said, “We’re huge fans of metal music and know there’s a lot of metalheads in the Cult of the Lamb community too. There’s a natural link between the game’s themes and heavy metal music and, given the recent release of our Unholy Alliance DLC and the Goat character, why not get some G.O.A.T.s from the world of metal to transform River Boy’s iconic melodies into heavy metal slammers?,” Armstrong explains. “All the artists featured on this release have given 100% commitment to this project, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their support and the backing of their management.”
Matthew K. Heafy, the lead singer of Trivium, agrees: “Video games have always been an important part of my life, so it’s been amazing to work with the Massive Monster team and turn Cult of the Lamb’s iconic soundtrack into a metal album. There’s such a natural link between video games, heavy metal and the game’s themes that a collaboration like this just makes sense. I hope fans of the game have as much fun listening to this as I did writing and performing my parts, and I hope the metal community and anyone who might not have played Cult of the Lamb before embraces this as a standalone album and checks out the game!”
Alongside the album release, there are some pretty sweet extras. Vinyl pre-orders for a special edition LP are live now on the Devolver Digital store, and there’s merch to go with it – including t-shirts designed by Godmachine and an original logo from metal artist Nekromorph.
You can pre-save the album now, and the single is streaming everywhere.
