Girls Will Be Girls, the stunning film that took home the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award, is hitting UK and Eire cinemas from 20th September. If you’re into coming-of-age stories with all the messy emotions (and a fair bit of boarding school drama), then this will tick all your boxes.
Directed by Shuchi Talati, the film is set in a rigid Himalayan boarding school, where we follow 16-year-old Mira as she grapples with desire, romance, and rebellion. But just as she starts finding her own way, she’s confronted by her mother, who never really had her own chance to come of age. So, yeah, there’s a lot going on, but that’s what’ll grip you. It’s about that all-too-relatable clash between generations, where both mother and daughter are trying to figure out who they are.
Not only did Girls Will Be Girls grab the Audience Award at Sundance, but it also picked up the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting. And from everything we’ve heard so far, it’s clear why.
If you’re in London this week, you’re in for a treat—Girls Will Be Girls is screening at Sundance Film Festival London on 8th and 9th June. And if you’re really into the behind-the-scenes stuff, there’s a panel on the director-actor relationship on 8th June and even a filmmaker press breakfast on 6th June. Perfect timing to get a feel for this film before it officially hits cinemas in September.
