How We Review

Last updated: 23 September 2026

Reviews on Unruly Folk are written by people, for people. Here’s how we do them, so you know exactly what you’re reading.

No scores. Ever.

Art doesn’t become objective because somebody slapped a number on it. Instead of a score, our reviews tell you what worked, what didn’t, what it actually felt like, and who we think it’s for. Look for Who it’s for at the end of newer reviews.

Opinion, clearly labelled

Reviews are subjective, of course they are. We try to make it obvious what’s fact, what’s our interpretation, and what’s personal opinion. “That’s how I read it” means exactly that.

Accessibility is part of the review

Where we can, reviews include an Accessibility Snapshot: what’s confirmed, what isn’t, and how we know. For games that means things like subtitles, remapping, difficulty options and motion settings. For gigs and venues it means getting there, access, toilets, seating, sensory stuff and quiet spaces. If something is our own observation rather than a confirmed feature, we say so.

You can find every Snapshot in one place on our Accessibility Snapshots page.

Content warnings, always

If something in a review or the thing being reviewed could hit hard, like flashing lights, grief, violence or sensory overload, there’s a Heads-up at the top. Spoilers are hidden behind a warning until you choose to look.

Representation matters to us

We’re neurodivergent, disabled and queer-led, so we notice who’s represented and how. Newer reviews may include a Rep check: who’s there, how they’re handled, and whether it’s real or bait.

Review copies and tickets

Sometimes publishers, labels and promoters give us review codes, early access or tickets. That never buys a good review, and we’ll say in the review when something was provided to us.

When we get it wrong

We research what we write and try very hard not to bullshit you. If we get something wrong, we’ll fix it and say what changed. Spotted a mistake? Email hello@unrulyfolk.com.

Disagree with us?

Please do, respectfully. Half the fun of caring about this stuff is finding out someone else loved the thing you bounced off.

Stay unruly.
