MJ Lenderman & The Wind just pulled up to NPR’s Tiny Desk, and it was always going to be special. Stripped back and raw, the set showcased why Lenderman has become one of indie rock’s most compelling voices.
Fresh off a sold-out North American tour and a stint on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Lenderman and his band performed three standouts from Manning Fireworks, Wristwatch, You Don’t Know The Shape I’m In, and Rip Torn—along with Catholic Priest from his 2021 album Ghost of Your Guitar Solo. If you weren’t already convinced that Lenderman is a songwriting force, this set will absolutely do the trick.
His brand of slacker-rock-meets-alt-country-meets-existential-dread has resonated far and wide, and seeing it performed in such an intimate setting only reinforces the magic. There’s something about his broken, croaky vocals and wry storytelling that feels real.
What’s Next for Lenderman?
Not one to sit still, MJ Lenderman & The Wind are already deep into the second leg of their North American tour before heading to Australia and New Zealand in March (including a headline slot at the Sydney Opera House—casual). Then, they’re off to the UK and Europe in May and June, with stops at Primavera Sound and Øya Festival. Oh, and some of those UK shows are already sold out, so if you’re thinking about grabbing tickets, get ’em here and move fast.
