Toronto’s Monstrosa isn’t here to play nice. Their latest single, ‘778,‘ is a gut-punch of alternative metal, packed with emotional weight, sharp riffs, and frontwoman Lauren Pryce’s mix of vulnerability and fire. It’s part alt-rock, part emo, part heavy-hitting metal—basically, if you like music that actually makes you feel something, you’ll want this on repeat.
But ‘778’ isn’t just a banger. It’s personal. Named after the address of Pryce’s first solo apartment, the track is a reflection on what it means to feel safe, both inside and out. “On the surface, it’s about being followed home at night,” Pryce explains. “It’s also about the dissonant experience of being both your biggest critic and biggest fan as an artist. I had to learn to love my music and, by extension, myself—a process that felt both liberating and terrifying.”
Bringing the Heavy With a Little Help From a Friend
Pryce teamed up with Mark Sparling (yep, the indie game composer behind the amazing A Short Hike) to crank up the intensity on ‘778.’ The two bonded over a shared love of metal during the pandemic—swapping playlists, geeking out over riffs, and apparently setting the groundwork for something brutal. “When it came time to record ‘778,’ I knew he’d help me take the song to its heaviest potential,” Pryce says. “He absolutely crushed it.”
