Los Angeles-based queer artist zzzahara has just announced a new album! Their upcoming release, Spiral Your Way Out, is set to drop on 10th January 2025 via Lex Records, and they’ve also shared a brand-new single and music video, ‘Ghosts,’ to give us a taste of what’s coming.
Spiral Your Way Out is about reclaiming control and dealing with the aftermath of a tumultuous relationship. zzzahara adds, “I was going through such a tough time, but I felt like I didn’t have anyone to reach out to.”
The album is a real village effort, having been produced and shaped by the likes of Sarah Tudzin (boygenius), Jorge Elbrecht (Japanese Breakfast and Sky Ferreira), and Franco Reid (Halsey).
The lead single, ‘Ghosts,’ tells the story of what a messy contradiction it can be to stay in a toxic relationship.
Hannah Bon directed the video for it, adding, “I was instantly moved by ‘Ghosts’ and how quickly and visually the idea started taking shape just through listening to zzzahara’s personal lyrics. Taking literal inspiration from the title Ghosts, the music video follows Zahara being haunted by an ex lover in their bedroom – all in a 2000 video game aesthetic. Working with 3D animator Hilmy Hendrakusuma we built a claustrophobic stage for a 3D Zahara to inhabit. The look was inspired by Japanese horror video games I grew up with such as Fatal Frame, Clocktower 3 and Alisa. It was such a great experience to create with Z and their team where they allowed for such a wonderfully collaborative environment. Directing this was so special and such a blast.”
