Well, this is a bummer. Lucasfilm has decided to pull the plug on The Acolyte, meaning we won’t be seeing a second season of the Star Wars spinoff starring Amandla Stenberg. The news dropped today via Deadline, over a month after the first season wrapped up on Disney+, and fans are gutted.
The Acolyte wasn’t exactly a flop, but it didn’t hit the highs we’ve seen from other Star Wars shows. It kicked off with solid numbers—4.8 million views on its first day, which made it the biggest Disney+ series premiere this year, but the momentum quickly faltered.
It seems like we’re seeing more and more shows getting the axe before they have a real chance to find their footing. The $100+ million budget left little room for error, causing The Acolyte to become the next victim of this trend. The show had a lot of potential, and it’s a shame to see it end so soon, especially when there was clearly so much set up for a second season. Leslye Headland, the show’s creator, even pitched ideas for where the story could go next. But, in the end, Lucasfilm decided to move on.
The Acolyte was shaping up to be something special—a mystery-thriller set during the final days of the High Republic, with a killer cast that included Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, and Carrie–Anne Moss. But now, it’s another show added to the list of “what could have been.” It’s always disappointing to see a series with so much promise get cut short, especially when there was so much anticipation for what might come next, but at this rate, I’ll be more surprised when a show that’s trying something different gets renewed.
