Abyssus, a ‘brinepunk’ FPS, announced during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, invites you to plumb the ocean’s depths in search of ancient secrets, all while battling mutated foes and wielding customisable, ancient-tech weaponry. Set for a 2025 release on Steam, Abyssus is the latest brainchild from DoubleMoose, a Swedish studio founded by ex-Coffee Stain developers and published by The Arcade Crew (The Last Spell, Infernax).
Before the full release, though, you can dive in early with the open alpha!
In Abyssus, you take on the role of a Brinehunter sent to investigate an electromagnetic anomaly on the seafloor. What you find, though, is more than you bargained for: a sprawling, sunken city filled with danger, mystery, and some truly gnarly guardians. Armed with ancient tech that’s as responsive as it is deadly, you’ll fight corrupted hordes while unravelling the secrets of this long-lost civilisation.
Combat is customisable with weapon mods and blessings that let you adapt your playstyle, while the alpha’s two bosses and miniboss encounters promise plenty of white-knuckle action. Think you’re up to the challenge? You can also toggle modifiers to crank up the intensity.
When and how to play the alpha:
The Abyssus alpha will run on Steam over three weekends in December:
- Friday, Dec. 6 – Monday, Dec. 9
- Friday, Dec. 13 – Monday, Dec. 16
- Friday, Dec. 20 – Monday, Dec. 23
Whether you prefer to dive solo or team up with up to three mates in co-op, the alpha gives you a taste of the game’s pulse-pounding multiplayer action and progression system. And with so many mods, artifacts, and abilities to uncover, there’s no shortage of reasons to explore every corner of this underwater kingdom.
What on earth is brinepunk?
If you’re wondering what brinepunk is, think steampunk, but wetter—and cooler. In Abyssus, the tech runs on brine, a mysterious substance found only in the ocean’s darkest reaches. It’s a fresh setting that adds a layer of intrigue and danger to the already high-stakes gameplay.
What’s next for Abyssus?
Post-launch plans include seasonal updates and events to keep players hooked, along with the promise of infinite replayability thanks to its deep build customisation and multiplayer options. If the alpha is anything to go by, Abyssus is shaping up to be a genre standout that blends frenetic FPS action with a setting you won’t forget.
Grab your gear, assemble your crew, and get ready to dive into the abyss. With Abyssus, the only way out is through—if you can survive.
