Bastille’s frontman, Dan Smith, has just released the first part of their latest project, ‘&’ (Ampersand), a stunning collection of story songs that weave together the lives and tales of extraordinary women and men.
An ampersand joins things together, and ‘&’ (Ampersand) does just that—combining stories of poets, artists, scientists, and mythological figures into a beautiful tapestry of sound. Dan Smith’s spellbinding melodies and thoughtful lyrics bring these characters to life, exploring their wide worlds and intimate moments.
Released in four parts leading up to the full album release on 25th October, Part One is here now, and it’s a treat for the ears. With four captivating tracks, it sets the tone for what promises to be a magical musical journey.
The Tracks
- Intros & Narrators: This track kicks off the album with a delicate fingerpicked guitar and sets the mission and tone of the album. Dan softly positions himself in the background, letting the stories of others take the spotlight. The one-take video, shot in the Sargasso Sea, highlights the importance of protecting our oceans. - Eve & Her Paradise Lost: This song delves into the burdens faced by women, burdened with blame and shame since the dawn of time.
- Seasons & Narcissus: A twisted love song about someone infatuated with their own reflection.
- Emily & Her Penthouse In The Sky: This track reimagines the life of Emily Dickinson, portraying her as a radical and revolutionary figure rather than just a reclusive poet.
More Stories to Come
The rest of ‘&’ promises to unveil more stories of misunderstood figures from myth, culture, and society. From neglected historical characters to touching personal tales inspired by Dan’s family, each song is a window into another world.
