In a powerful move for diversity in fashion, renowned footballer David Alaba and acclaimed designer Grace Wales Bonner have teamed up to launch the Wales Bonner and David Alaba Internship Programme. It’s a paid opportunity, developed to uplift Black and Black mixed-heritage graduates, and aims to help smash down barriers and provide invaluable experience in the fashion industry.
This six-month internship will see two successful applicants join the team at Wales Bonner’s London studio, with roles spanning design, product development, research, and communications. As well as the hands-on experience, continuous mentoring throughout the process will be provided, courtesy of Mentoring Matters. The chosen graduates will also join the Mentoring Matters Alumni programme, unlocking long-term access to exclusive events, workshops, paid opportunities, and a supportive network of peers.
David Alaba, known for his efforts on the footy field with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, shared his motivation for backing this internship, stating: “I’m aware that there are many young, underrepresented Black fashion graduates who possess the level of fashion excellence required to work at an incredible brand like Wales Bonner. However, they still remain underrepresented within the industry. My hope is that this internship enables these young Black students to showcase their excellence to the world!”
Wales Bonner’s label has long been celebrated for merging European luxury with an Afro-Atlantic spirit, and this internship programme fits right in with the brand’s ethos of uplifting diverse voices. Grace Wales Bonner is equally excited to offer this opportunity: “I am very glad to play a part in this initiative with David Alaba and Mentoring Matters – it is truly rewarding to be able to support these young talents and to continue supporting diversity in the industry.”
