Remember Drowned in Sound? The iconic music blog that lit up the internet in 2000 with its cleverly written reviews and features about everything from metal to hip-hop? Well, it’s back in a new iteration.
Founded by neurodivergent editor Sean Adams, Drowned in Sound will be relaunching this year as an “audio publication”. Think part record label, part podcast. The relaunch will include the return of its Singles Club, with one release per month starting on February 7th.
Adams had a hand in launching the career of The Anchoress while also managing Charlotte Church and Ed Harcourt, being involved with BBC 6 Music, Max Richter & Yulia Mahr’s studio, and producing the political hit podcast The Trawl. Now he’s putting all his energy into Drowned in Sound to make it bigger and better.
The first release on the Singles Club is ‘Cold Hearted Woman‘ by The Faux Faux, which is the first solo release by Faith Vern from Manchester’s notorious punk gang PINS. “We got talking a couple of years ago, when she sang with Iggy Pop at the BBC’s legendary Maida Vale studios and kept in touch,” said Adams. “Then I heard some of her solo demos, and I can’t wait to share the magical music Faith’s been working on.“
Sean adds, “One of the worst things about being a neurodivergent music critic was transcribing interviews. I love being able to let my curiosity for a topic or an artist-run amok, but it feels like the medium of words on a page doesn’t suit my brain. I spend most of my time listening to the radio and playlists and producing the political podcast The Trawl, and I think if I was starting out now, I’d be a podcaster, speaking to musicians and seeking out experts. So that’s what I’m gonna do, and slip in conversations with artists on the label.“
