Lilly Wachowski is back at it again, bringing another killer queer story to the screen, and this time it’s got a monster twist. She’s producing an animated feature based on Hell Followed With Us, the 2022 novel by Andrew Joseph White. If you’re into apocalyptic vibes, LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent representation, and a bit of dystopian monster madness, this one’s going to be right up your alley.
The story? Benji, a trans teen, escapes from a fundamentalist cult that’s basically brought on the end of the world. Oh, and he’s infected with a bioweapon that’s slowly turning him into a monster. After escaping the cult, he teams up with a group of badass LGBTQ+ teens, led by Nick, who’s not only autistic but also “gorgeous” and “a deadly shot.” Yes, please!
Wachowski, who you’ll know from The Matrix and Bound, says this project brings the power of found family and protecting queer siblings from dogmatic hate to the forefront. We love to see it. Honestly, it’s about time we get more stories like this—autistic, queer, and full of heart, even if there’s some body horror and madness along the way. It’s also refreshing to see autistic representation in such a central role with Nick—he’s not just there for token diversity; he’s the leader. He’s. The. LEADER. YES!
Bob Higgins, the president of Trustbridge Entertainment, is hyped about the adaptation, calling it a “no-brainer.” And with screenwriters Alvaro Rodriguez (Machete) and Warren Wagner (The Only Safe Place Left Is the Dark) on board, the story is in good hands. Plus, the author is consulting on the production, so we’re in for a faithful (but probably gut-wrenching) adaptation.
Wachowski’s also got her hands full with other projects, including her first solo feature, Trash Mountain and producing the next Matrix movie—so it’s clear she’s still very much in the game and championing LGBTQ+ stories all the way.
If you’re looking for monster mayhem, a fight for survival, and a found family of queer teens sticking together, keep an eye out for Hell Followed With Us. We’re here for the chaos, the representation, and a fresh take on what a dystopian world can look like.
We can’t wait for this one!
