Indie publishers Ratalaika Games and Shinyuden are about to drop a retro bombshell with their new action-packed platformer, Retro Revengers, hitting PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on July 23rd, 2024, for just $9.99/€9.99.
Inspired by the classics we grew up with, Retro Revengers brings you a colourful and fun experience that’s anything but ordinary. With music by the legendary Manami Matsumae, the genius behind Mega Man and Shovel Knight, and bosses designed by the talented mangaka Yuu Watari, you’re in for a treat.
But here’s the kicker: the heroes of our story, Ossan, Taicho, and Notchi, are actually real-life Japanese video game streamers from the Niconico channel. Known as “Ii Otonatachi,” these guys are the ultimate retro game fans who’ve decided to jump into the digital world to save retro gaming from being overshadowed by big-budget mainstream games.
The Gameplay
Embark on an epic journey with Ossan, Mao, Taicho, Matchan, and Notchi, who have been granted special powers by the Retro Goddess. Each character comes with unique abilities—think Homing Fire Balls, grappling hooks, and even Power Poots (yes, you read that right). As you switch between characters, you’ll need to master their distinct powers to navigate diverse environments, fend off enemies, and take down the bosses standing in your way.
Levels and Challenges
The game is designed to emulate the look, sound, and feel of pre-1995 classics. With stunning 16-bit pixel art and retro-themed music, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to the golden age of gaming. The levels are tailored to each character’s strengths, offering a fresh challenge every time. Whether it’s floating momentarily after a jump with Ossan or using a grappling hook with another character, you’ll need to strategise to overcome the Demon Overlord of Triple-A and his minions.
Features and Fun
Epic Soundtrack: Tunes by Manami Matsumae that’ll keep you pumped.
Massive Playability: Tons of comedy elements and genre-mixing gameplay.
Difficulty Levels: Choose from three different levels, plus CRT filters and resolution modes.
True Ending: The second round of gameplay gets even more intense, where you need to combine abilities to see the true ending.
So, are you ready to save the world from the Triple-A Menace? Grab your controller and become a Retro Revenger on July 23rd.
