The Return of PlayStation Handhelds: Is the PS6 Finally Going to Get It Right?

From PSP dreams to Vita disappointments, could Sony finally give us the portable powerhouse we deserve?

Handheld gaming has always had a special place in my heart. Remember the PSP? It felt like the future when it dropped in 2005. Portable gaming with console-level graphics, a library of great games, and the ability to watch movies on the go. Then came the PS Vita. That thing had everything: a gorgeous OLED screen, insane graphics, and a library of games like Persona 4 Golden that still make us weep. But, like most things Sony has done with handhelds, it was a spectacular flop.

Now, we’re hearing rumours that Sony might be planning to bring handheld gaming back. This time, as part of the PlayStation 6 experience. Could this be the handheld redemption we’ve been waiting for?

The PS6 Handheld: Fact or Fiction?

The talk around the PS6 is already heating up, but this new rumour has us more intrigued than any specs leak. Apparently, Sony’s next console could come with a dockable handheld companion, similar to the Nintendo Switch. If this is true, we’re talking about a PS6 experience that you can take on the go, with the power of a PS5 in your hands. The handheld is said to have specs that rival those of a base PS5, featuring a 1080p display and backward compatibility for PS4 and PS5 games. No mention of PS3 backward compatibility, but we aren’t holding our breath on that one.

The handheld would retail around $500 and would be an additional purchase on top of the PS6 itself (unless Sony bundles them, which, fingers crossed).

Is Sony Finally Going to Get Handhelds Right?

Let’s not kid ourselves: Sony has messed up in the handheld space before. The PSP was solid, but it was overshadowed by the rise of smartphones. Then the Vita came along. Gorgeous, powerful, and ahead of its time. But Sony dropped the ball. No consistent support, no real push for developers to build for it. It became one of those “what could’ve been” stories in gaming history.

Now we’re talking about a potential PS6 handheld. Can Sony learn from its past mistakes and deliver something that actually competes with the Switch 2? Nintendo’s done a lot of things right with the Switch. Great games, solid first-party exclusives, and the whole hybrid thing is genius,  its hardware can’t touch the PS5 in terms of raw power. The rumoured PS6 handheld, though? That could bring a serious edge.

But here’s the catch: Sony’s first-party exclusives have always been one of its biggest strengths, but they don’t have the same draw as Nintendo’s catalog. The Switch has MarioZelda, and Animal Crossing. Sony doesn’t have a signature franchise that’s quite as universally beloved. So even if the PS6 handheld is packing more power than the Switch 2, it’s going to take more than specs to dethrone Nintendo.

Is the Time Right for a PlayStation Handheld?

There’s no denying it. Handheld gaming is booming right now. The Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and other portable gaming rigs are killing it, showing that gamers want more than just mobile games on the go. Sony could step in with the PS6 handheld and offer a high-powered, AAA gaming experience that the Switch just can’t deliver. But the big question is: Will they do it right this time?

We’ve been burned before, but this could be Sony’s moment to reclaim the handheld throne. Or, it could be another “almost” situation. Let’s hope they get it right.

TL;DR:

  • Sony’s rumoured PS6 handheld could launch in 2027, offering PS5-level power and backward compatibility with PS4/PS5 games.
  • The handheld could retail for around $500, separate from the main PS6 console.
  • Could Sony finally nail the handheld gaming experience, or is this just another missed opportunity?
  • Pre-order the PS6 when available, and let’s hope this is the one that finally delivers the portable gaming we deserve.
