Los Angeles-based indie gem zzzahara is back, serving up shoegaze vibes and emo nostalgia with their latest single, ‘In Your Head‘, from the upcoming album Spiral Your Way Out, dropping this Friday, January 10th, via Lex Records.
Co-written and produced with former Ducktails guitarist Alex Craig, ‘In Your Head’ came together over marathon music sessions, emo hot takes, and what sounds like a borderline-unhealthy amount of riff nerding. “We worked for like 9-10 hours without eating,” zzzahara recalls. “I’ll never forget how hungry I was.” Honestly, relatable content.
The accompanying music video, directed by Bethany Michalski, pays homage to mid-2000s emo and punk aesthetics. zzzahara leans unapologetically into their emo roots, calling on influences like Bright Eyes and Broken Social Scene while diving headfirst into a self-described Elliott Smith era. Made during a three-month creative explosion, Spiral Your Way Out captures zzzahara’s signature balance of pain and joy, frustration and healing. It’s like a heartfelt mix CD you’d make for your crush in high school if that CD also came with a manifesto about embracing your messy, scuffed-up self.
