Simon The Sorcerer Meets Rick Astley

This '90s point-and-click legend is making a comeback, and it won't let you down.

Simon the Sorcerer is back, and no, this isn’t some multiverse joke where you fall into a pixelated wormhole and wake up in 1993. This is real. This is happening. And it looks proper magic.

After an absolutely wild development journey, Simon the Sorcerer Origins is now locked and loaded for release on 28 October 2025, landing on just about every platform you can conjure: PC, Mac, Linux, Steam Deck, Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox. ININ Games and Smallthing Studios have just dropped a cheeky new story trailer — and yes, it’s as sarcastic, weird, and chaotic as you remember. Possibly even more so. Watch the trailer below:

Set just weeks before the OG 1993 Simon the Sorcerer game, Origins takes us back to where it all began, but don’t expect a soulless pixel-for-pixel reboot. This is a fully hand-drawn, lovingly animated prequel that absolutely leans into the snarky, slightly unhinged humour that made Simon iconic in the first place.

The devs at Smallthing Studios haven’t just slapped some new shaders on a nostalgia trip. They’ve worked closely with Simon Woodroffe (the OG creator, alongside his dad Mike) to dig into the lore, the characters, and the vibe. The result? A game that’s respectful of its roots but still fresh enough that it won’t feel like you’ve accidentally booted up ScummVM.

Let’s talk cast. The English voice of Simon is Chris Barrie (Red Dwarf’s Rimmer), while the German version gets Erik Borner. And because this game is clearly not interested in being subtle, the soundtrack features Rick Astley. Like, actually, Rick Astley. Yes, the Rick Astley. The one you’re never gonna—well, you know.

Composer Mason Fisher (whose credits include F.E.A.RAge of Wonders, and Eye of the Beholder) handles the score, bringing that retro-fantasy-meets-modern-drama vibe that somehow just works.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is going big with global localisation, too. The game’s set to be available in 11 languages, which is great news if your humour’s more dry sarcasm in Deutsch than chaotic banter in English.

And for those of us who grew up clicking everything on the screen just to hear Simon say something rude about a tree, it’s kind of emotional seeing it come full circle. Thirty years on, and he’s still got that sharp tongue, but now it’s paired with animation worthy of Disney or Netflix (literally — the dev team has credits across both).

TL;DR:

  • Simon the Sorcerer Origins is a prequel to the 1993 classic, out 28 Oct 2025
  • Coming to PC, Mac, Linux, Steam Deck, Switch, PS4/5, Xbox
  • Hand-drawn animation, full voice acting (Chris Barrie!!), 11 language options
  • Original creators involved. Nostalgia intact. Rick Astley included
  • New trailer is out now, and it’s full of charm, sarcasm, and wizard nonsense

You can wishlist Simon the Sorcerer Origins now on Steam.
