Clear out, cash in, and save the planet
Ready to ditch the clutter and maybe score a retro lava lamp while you’re at it? Garage Sale Trail is back for 2025, running over two epic weekends — 8–9 and 15–16 November. Billed as Australia’s biggest festival of pre-loved stuff, it’s all about turning your unwanted gear into someone else’s treasure while keeping mountains of junk out of landfill.
Last year alone, nearly 300,000 Aussies hit up 13,000 garage sales nationwide, giving 755,000+ items a second life. That’s a lot of Tupperware, trampolines, and questionable DVD boxsets saved from the tip.
Famous faces join the Trail
This year, the Trail’s got star power:
- Montaigne (Eurovision 2021 icon, ARIA Award-winner)
- Beci Orpin (design legend)
- Costa Georgiadis (Gardening Australia host, part-time garden gnome)
- dirtgirl (eco-queen from dirtgirlworld)
They’re backing everything from community sales to the brand-new Kids Garage Sale Trail, which lets kids set up their own stalls, make bunting, and learn the magic of reuse.
As dirtgirl put it: “A garage sale isn’t just about selling stuff… it’s about sharing stories, passing on treasures, and making space for something new to grow.”
Costa added: “Reuse, rethink, rehome, it’s a recipe for growing joy.” Honestly, when the man dressed as a gnome tells you to sell your junk, you listen.
The Great Aussie Clear Out
Not sure where to start? Enter the Great Aussie Clear Out: a 31-day decluttering challenge designed to get you sale-ready. One day you’re tackling the coffee table, the next you’re finally dealing with that cursed Tupperware drawer. By the end, you’ve got a neat little pile ready to sell, and maybe some sanity back.
Bigger, better, and greener than ever
No garage? No worries. Community sales are on the rise in 2025, with help from local libraries, community gardens, men’s sheds, and even pubs. The Trail makes it easy to register, set up, and promote your sale with free guides and materials.
And with climate change breathing down our necks (cheers, National Climate Risk Assessment), reuse has never been more urgent, or more empowering. Plus, with one in four Aussies struggling to make ends meet, selling secondhand isn’t just green, it’s survival.
