Five years. That’s how long it’s been since Great Grandpa graced us with an album. In that time, we’ve survived a pandemic, seen billionaires launch themselves into space, and watched approximately 7,000 new streaming services pop up. But finally, the wait is over. Their new album, ‘Patience, Moonbeam‘, is out on March 28th, and the lead single, ‘Junior,’ is already here to make you nostalgic for a time when pulling off “light crimes” with your mates was considered a solid Friday night.
A Band on a Break, Not a Breakup
When a band goes radio silent for half a decade, you start to wonder if they’ve called it quits. Turns out, Great Grandpa wasn’t splitting up, they were just living, and that’s a pretty important thing to do as an artist. Lead singer Al Menne moved to LA and went full solo mode, Dylan Hanwright got hitched and started producing, Cam LaFlam became a full-time book nerd and opened a shop, and Pat and Carrie Goodwin moved to Denmark to have a baby and live their best European lives. Basically, everyone was busy doing their own thing and, I assume, collecting life experiences to fuel their next batch of bangers.
In 2023, they regrouped, scrapped most of what they’d been working on, and started fresh. Classic overachievers.
If their last album, Four of Arrows, was a sprawling indie-rock masterpiece, Patience, Moonbeam takes that DNA and tosses in a few mutations for good measure. The result? An album that’s part rock opera, part country hoedown, and entirely unpredictable.

Great Grandpa is proof that sometimes, taking a break is the best thing you can do. Patience, Moonbeam feels like the work of a band that’s grown, changed, and still found their way back to each other. It’s completely worth the five-year wait.
