Today’s a good day for music! London-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Lara Jones has just dropped her latest single, ‘Lie‘, and it slaps. Hard. With energetic synths and syncopated bass, this breakbeat-led track that I’ve been dancing to for days. Plus, she’s got some live dates coming up, so mark your calendars!
Lara’s new single ‘Lie’ follows her June release ‘Depressed RN‘. This track is the second single from her upcoming EP Divided, set to drop on September 13th via Sound Records. This EP promises to be her most dance floor-driven project yet, blending high-energy electronics with jazz harmonies, grime, and a web of arpeggiated synths and glitchy beats.
Lara composed, produced and mixed the entire EP in her cosy London flat. ‘Lie’ features vocoder-led vocals that merge with Lara’s own voice, creating a feeling of confusion that perfectly complements the questioning lyric, “Did you lie to get by?“. Lara says the song addresses the uneasy feelings around coming to terms with your identity as a queer person and the struggle of lying to yourself and others before coming out.
Listen, I came out as a lesbian at 27 after being married to a man for 10 years, so this was practically made for me.
The Divided EP explores the duality of daily life for Lara, both personal and political. As a queer musician and parent, she navigates the highs and lows, light and darkness of everyday life, reflecting on the societal divisions and personal battles we all face. Her music aims to unite and inspire others going through similar emotions, and as far as I’m concerned, she does it beautifully.
