Canada’s genre-bending collective, Scions, have just dropped their latest single, ‘The Mountain‘, and it’s every bit as powerful and atmospheric as you’d expect from this avant-garde crew. The track is the second taste of their stunning upcoming album, To Cry Out In The Wilderness, set to release on November 8th via Idée Fixe Records. Take my word for it; you should pre-order this one.
The Mountain feels like a sonic avalanche. It’s a reflection on nature’s fury, survival in a world that’s falling apart, and the inevitable clash with forces far beyond our control. It’s the type of song I can imagine being right at home in a Horizon video game as Aloy tackles a Thunderjaw.
Lead vocalist and co-writer Cormac Culkeen says it’s “an ancient, terrifying guardian rousing in response to the world’s devastation.”
Band leader Michael Cloud Duguay explains, “Much of this record deals with quiet intensities. With ‘The Mountain’, I wanted to push the limit of those intensities by exploring brutal noise, garnished with the same beauty found elsewhere on the record, to investigate both poles of our composition and performance.” And it works. This track is an earthquake in music form.

If you’re keen to experience this genre-defying journey in person, Scions will be performing To Cry Out In The Wilderness in full at St. George’s Round Church on November 20th. It’s going to be an unforgettable show.
