The latest designation of a super national nature reserve (NNR) has been hailed as a significant victory for nature conservation in the UK.
More than 7,400 acres of water, forests and mountains in the Lake District have been designated an NNR – making it the biggest reserve in Cumbria and one of the largest in England.
The area, known as Ennerdale, is home to a wide range of rare and unique wildlife, including red squirrels, freshwater pearl mussels, and Arctic charr. It is also home to juniper plants and other rare species that have struggled to survive in the modern landscape.
The designation has been welcomed by conservationists and environmentalists, who say it highlights the importance of protecting our natural heritage.
The Wild Ennerdale partnership manages the area, which includes Forestry England, the National Trust, United Utilities, and Natural England. Using a range of strategies – such as sustainable grazing by hardy cattle, efforts to restore native trees and woods, restoring more natural river processes, and planting juniper – the partnership is working to help nature recover in this beautiful part of the country.
