George Clooney has put his weight behind a timely new documentary that seeks to expose the truth. Titled How to Build a Truth Engine, it will have its European premiere in Vienna on 13th October, followed by a UK premiere at the Leeds International Film Festival on 4th November.
Produced by Friedrich Moser Film GmbH in collaboration with SIE Films, The Front Corner, SideXSide Studios, and Rebel Entertainment, the film is written and directed by Austrian documentary filmmaker Friedrich Moser and executive produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. Clooney’s involvement goes beyond a stamp of approval. He’s committed to the movement to end propaganda, believing it to be of critical priority.
Clooney on Disinformation
“There’s never been a more important time to talk about disinformation,” Clooney said in a statement. “Friedrich walks us through this complex world in painstaking detail. It’s like a slow-moving train that everyone can see, but no one can stop. At least this time, we can’t say we weren’t warned.”
And he’s right – the documentary is relevant, particularly in the lead-up to the US elections, with social media awash in falsehoods, deepfakes, and conspiracy theories. Moser’s film digs deep into the workings of our minds, exploring why humans are so vulnerable to disinformation and how this vulnerability is being exploited to shift reality itself.
Behind the Scenes of How to Build a Truth Engine
The film sees experts from technology, journalism, neuroscience, and even folklore unravel how deception spreads and how easily it can hijack people’s minds. As one of the film’s protagonists warns, “If we lose a grip on the truth, we lose our civilisation. Losing that grip is closer than most people think.”
For Moser, this documentary is the culmination of years of work. He’s not only the writer and director but also serves as cinematographer and leading producer. He’s joined by a powerhouse team of producers from California, including Ivan Williams, Robert Rippberger, and Amina Bayou, with a slew of executive producers such as Tonmoy Monsoor, Gabriel Silverman, and Rock Jacobs, among others.
European and UK Premieres
The European premiere will take place at Vienna’s Gartenbaukino on Sunday, 13th October, at 16:00. Shortly after, the UK premiere will be held at Everyman Cinema in Leeds on 4th November at 20:00 as part of the Leeds International Film Festival. From there, the film will continue its international festival journey, bringing its message to audiences worldwide.
