On Saturday, 3 October, Hayley Williams got to the bit of Ice in My OJ where she has, quite literally, ice in her OJ, and stopped the song at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California, to shout “Fuck ICE!” A few lines later came “Free motherfucking Palestine!” The Department of Homeland Security was not a fan.
If you’ve been following The Hayley Williams Show tour, none of this is new. Both lines have become a regular part of the song on this run, and before True Believer, she’s been telling crowds that “the greatest threat to American democracy is Christian nationalism.” Chula Vista sits in San Diego County, not far from the Mexican border, which really sent the moment home.
DHS had a suggestion
Fox News took the clip to DHS, and a spokesperson sent back this: “America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We suggest Ms. Williams to thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.” DHS also pointed Fox to its own figures on assaults against ICE personnel, which it says rose sharply under the current administration.
She has never treated politics as something to tuck away so the merch table stays comfortable.
On Monday, Hayley posted a screenshot of that statement to her Instagram Story with a suggestion of her own: “And may I suggest all Nazi bitches suck on my fat dick.”
Hell yes, Hayley. A federal agency took time out of its day to tell a muso how to feel about it, and she answered in one sentence without backing down an inch. I’ve been a Hayley fan since I was a kid, and I’ve watched her grow from the teenager fronting Paramore into an exceptional adult who is unruly as fuck. This is the same Hayley who told a Paramore crowd in 2023 that anyone voting for Ron DeSantis was “fucking dead to me”, and who went after the Tennessee bills targeting drag performers that same year, in the state Paramore calls home. She has never treated politics as something to tuck away, so the merch table stays comfortable, and that consistency is everything.
Meanwhile, the actual music
All of this is happening on the back of Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, her 2025 solo album, which is where Ice in My OJ lives. She’s also just been announced for the 2027 edition of Primavera Sound in Barcelona, running 3 to 5 June at Parc del Fòrum alongside Doechii, Phoebe Bridgers, FKA twigs, Turnstile and Robyn. Later that month, she’s supporting Fontaines D.C. at both of their Slane Castle homecoming shows in Ireland, on 26 and 27 June.
Side Quest What’s Hayley’s Other Band?
Power Snatch is Hayley’s duo with Daniel James, who co-wrote and produced most of Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party. They put out EP1 on Bandcamp in February, then surprise-dropped the four-track EP2 there in August, announcing it with a clip of the 1973 animated sci-fi film Fantastic Planet playing over the opening track.
Coming to Australia (but not Perth)
The Hayley Williams Show is heading our way for Laneway 2027, plus two headline shows, and both of those have already sold out. As we covered when the lineup dropped, Laneway is skipping Perth this time, and I’m still so damn sad about it, because flying over east isn’t happening on my budget. The tour is benefiting Just Futures.
