Big main-character energy incoming. Skye Newman has officially been crowned the winner of BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2026, following a vote by more than 170 industry insiders who collectively went: Yeah, it’s her.
The annual ‘Sound of’ list has a scary-good track record for spotting future stars early, and Skye topping it feels like confirmation of what’s already been happening in plain sight.
From debut to domination (very quickly, actually)
2025 was a proper breakout year for Skye Newman. She became the first UK female solo artist in over a decade to land two Top 20 singles with her very first releases:
- ‘Hairdresser’ – the debut that started the snowball
- ‘Family Matters’ – a Top 5 hit that made the industry pay attention
Her songwriting feels lived-in rather than polished for radio. That honesty has earned her serious respect from artists and tastemakers alike, including Elton John, Dua Lipa, Olivia Dean, and JADE, all of whom were part of the voting panel.
