It’s not perfect. But it’s definitely Tim’s.
Australia’s favourite barefoot musical maniac, Tim Minchin, dropped his brand new album TimMinchinTimeMachine via BMG, featuring 11 freshly recorded tracks penned in the decade before he blew up.
The album is out now, and it’s everything you’d expect from a Minchin deep-dive: sardonic, sincere, smart as hell, and yes, it might make you cry a little in the Coles carpark. (Not speaking from experience. Maybe.)
A love letter to his younger self (and probably yours too)
Before the arena tours, the Matilda Tony noms, and roasting of spiritual grifters in majestic 7-minute piano ballads, Tim was scribbling down songs that were too raw, weird, or personal to make it to the big stage. Until now.
Tim Minchin Time Machine is a curated time capsule of unreleased gems, including ‘Understand It’ and the long-beloved fan favourite ‘Not Perfect’, which capture a younger Tim on the edge of becoming a household name.
He calls this version of ‘Not Perfect’ a “campfire version”, stripped of orchestra and excess, with acoustic guitars and warm, reflective storytelling. And yes, it still ends with “It’s not perfect, but it’s mine”.
“It’s about being a self inside a mind inside a body inside a house inside a solar system,” says Tim, in possibly the most relatable description of anxiety ever given.
And he’s taking it on the road
To celebrate the album release, Tim’s doing what Tim does best — hitting the road with a piano and probably a handful of existential dread jokes.
An intimate album launch kicks off on Wednesday, 13 August at The Grand Electric Theatre in Sydney, complete with a Q&A and short solo set.
Then it’s full tilt Minchin chaos from October to December, with an Australian tour that hits all the big spots — and yes, Perth, he’s coming home.
