Alright, football lovers, you’re in. FIFA and Qatar’s Supreme Committee are teaming up to bring us We Were There, an eight-part series that’s all about the untold stories behind the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And the cherry on top? Star Wars legend Daisy Ridley is narrating it. Nice.
Each episode runs for 30 minutes, putting together unseen FIFA footage, intimate moments from the stadiums, and emotional fan reactions. There are locker room chats, behind-the-scenes footage, and moments from the pitch that didn’t make TV. You’ll see Argentina’s Lionel Scaloni and Emi Martinez, France’s Didier Deschamps, and a whole bunch of others who were at the centre of the action.
What’s cool is that it’s not just the big names telling their stories. We Were There highlights some seriously dedicated fans, too – like the Saudi supporter who walked across the desert to watch his team beat Argentina or the young player mascot who had a one-on-one moment with Kylian Mbappe. These are the stories that remind us the World Cup is a global event that means the world to so many people.
Directed by Luke Mellows (Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes) and produced by Noah Media Group, FIFA’s unseen archive, combined with fan-shot footage, gives it a really personal touch.
So, if you’re still riding the World Cup high, We Were There is definitely something you need to watch. Keep an eye out for it – it’s coming soon!
